Spread the word: watch for a mailing from the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission (WERC) that will contain voting procedures for new certification elections for the Education Support Professionals and Substitute Teacher Bargaining Units. Each group will need 51% of all employees in their group to certify the Kenosha Education Association as their certified bargaining agent. It requires that individuals take the step to vote “Yes” on the ballot, as everyone who chooses not to vote will be recorded as a “No.”
The current issue before the School Board on health insurance contributions is a perfect example of the importance of having an organization devoted to looking out for the interests of those it represents. Creating a forum in which a group can come together to share their needs and concerns, as with the Substitute Teachers Concerns Committee, is also an example of a benefit to having such an organization. While the importance of having access to representation when one has a need cannot be over-emphasized (and would be at risk in a “non-unionized” environment), these added benefits should not be minimized.
None of this can or would happen without the support and involvement of KEA members. So watch for the mailing, be prepared to vote Thursday, May 12th (beginning at NOON), through NOON, Wednesday, June 1st, and encourage your colleagues to do the same.
We will be sending out notifications in addition to those you will receive from both the WERC and the District. Unfortunately, restrictions on access to the worksites to outside of the teacher workday may make scheduling voting events extremely difficult, but if anyone wishes to help us organize such an event at their building, please do not hesitate to contact us – and thank you, in advance, for your support.
